Would you like a pool by the ocean?

Just imagine waking up to see a beautiful pink and purple sunrise glistening over the ocean as soft waves brush the shore. That was my view last week when I was in Fort Lauderdale for a business conference. I was staying at the Trump Towel and spent my mornings doing yoga in the pool. It was bliss.

Wouldn’t it be nice to wake up every morning and do yoga ocean side in your own pool? Believe me, it would be:) Does it sound like a pipe dream to you?

Hmmm, why is that?

Why does having your own oceanside pool equipped with a private yoga instructor sound like an impossible dream? Is it because we think of it as an expensive luxury? If that’s what you thought, I want to share a little insight that has shifted my mindset around dreaming big.

First, let me ask you a few more questions. Do you have running water? How about a microwave? Are you a 2-car family? Well, guess what, if you were living in a 3rd world country, you might think all of those things are luxuries. We, on the other hand, take them for granted. However, they are not free, are they?

We pay for clean, running water with our taxes. The cost of the microwave is built into the price of a house and the average  new car will put you out around $30k. Most of us don’t think of these conveniences as outrageous extravagances because we have become accustomed to the cost.

Now imagine you were a billionaire, would an oceanside pool seem outrageous? Probably not, unless the diving board was encrusted with diamonds! Why? Because you could easily afford the expense. This is where the mindset magic lies.

When we make judgments that certain things are extravagances, we push our dreams away from us. Luxury and expense are all a point of view. If you have the means to buy something and the desire to have it, it is no long an extravagance is it?

As entrepreneurs, we need to change our language about what seems out of our reach. Instead of saying something is expensive, we need to say, “I can’t afford that…yet.” It is a more honest way of talking about our current situation. Something you want may not be expensive at all to someone else. For example, I know entrepreneurs who would never pay $2000 for a 4-hour VIP Day and others who see no issue with spending over $20,000 for the same 4-hours.

When we say things are expensive, we often resent the price. When we replace “That’s expensive” with “I can’t afford that yet” we start to take away some of the toxic resentment around our current lack of funds which is critical for our financial growth. We have to start honoring high-value and high-investment if we are ever going to reach our goals. If a coach charges $20K for a VIP Day and we feel incensed about the price, what chance does that give us of ever having our own successful high-end offer. I’ll tell you…zip, zero, nada.

So next time you see something you covet, pay attention. What are the feelings you have around the cost? Are you angry? Jealous? Wistful? Try to change your thoughts around to “Every day I’m getting closer” or even “That is so going to be mine!” See how much more empowering those thoughts are. It gives you hope and energy. And hopefully some day soon, maybe even a pool by the ocean complete with yoga instructor.:)
